There can be little doubt of the widespread affect of the Drive-By Media. Their ability to fire random storylines and misinformation into the American public and cause disruption and destruction of lives has plagued our society for years. I could write pages on these planned acts of “violence”… However, I want to focus on two that have been directed at the Doctor of Democracy, the man who coined the term Drive-By Media, Rush Limbaugh.
A few years ago Rush, a fanatical football fan, was offered the chance to use his considerable broadcast talents by joining ESPN’s Sunday Morning Football Broadcast Team. Rush provided commentary and counter points of view to the musings of the regular crew. A few weeks into the season Rush made a comment about Donovan McNabb, the Philadelphia Eagle Quarterback. Rush was commenting on his belief that McNabb, the athlete, was not performing well that season. He further commented that this opinion was shared by others but was not being discussed by the mainstream sports media because of their desire to promote black quarterbacks no matter their performance. He was commenting on the motives of the media.
Well the story was not reported that way… The Drive-Bys fired machine gun blasts of misinformation across the airwaves. The story was told that Rush had claimed McNabb was not a good quarterback because he was black. Basically the Drive-Bys used elements of the comments to construct their own story. It was an obvious attempt to play on the left’s portrayal of conservatives as racists, bigots, and homophobes. Rush resigned from ESPN to shield the show from further controversy and keep the focus on football, one of his big loves.
Last week Rush began commenting on the misleading ads taped by Michael J. Fox. Former portrayer of staunch republican Alex P. Keaton, Fox recorded ads about a proposed Constitutional amendment being voted on in Missouri that would make stem cell research the law of the land. In the ad Fox indicates that Jim Talent, Missouri Republican Senator, is against stem cell research because he opposed the amendment. Talent is opposed to the amendment because it in fact does not legalize stem cell research, but actually legalizes cloning. Stem cell research is already legal and Talent supports it. The ad is totally misleading and is another obvious “October Surprise”. Similar ads by MJF are being run in Maryland against Republican candidate for Senator, Lt. Gov. Michael Steele.
The controversy concerning Rush is his out loud wonderings about MJF’s appearance in the ads. He appears to be experiencing the Parkinson symptoms to a more severe degree than he otherwise appears in public. He has admitted in his biographical book that he modified his medication to display symptoms when testifying before a Congressional Committee. Rush simply pondered out loud if he had done the same thing for this ad. The ad is dramatic and misleading. It shows the horrible affects of Parkinson coupled with incorrect information about the amendment and the opposition candidate’s stance. Rush has always said that once you enter the political fray you are open for criticism. He has not said that MJF cannot speak up for stem cell research. He has criticized MJF for using his illness to misrepresent a political stance and trying to adversely effect an election.
Of course the Drive-Bys have twisted this into a story about Rush saying that MJF cannot speak about his disease and beliefs in a political ad. They are portraying Rush as a heartless animal that is making fun of MJF. They are showing sped up video from the Ditto-Cam where Rush was showing the radio audience the severity of MJF’s movements in the ad. The video was intentionally sped up and is being shown without audio to make it seem Rush is making fun of MJF.
Is it any wonder that I need Pepto-Bismol and Exlax to even try to watch the Drive-Bys? My system can’t take the abuse. I therefore think for myself and explore the true facts of story. If you are listening the former “Big Three” or reading the Grey Lady or some other declining sales newspaper rag…STOP! Use the internet, watch Fox for as long as you can stand it, and for crying out loud look at more than one account of a news story. Glancing at headlines doesn’t work. These are the main shots of the Drive-By media, they claim the most victims.
As I always say… Think Free!
